merman and girl by a pool
I’ve been busy, and haven’t drawn in a while. Today I’m sick though, so I don’t have much of an excuse not to draw something quick. So here it is: a picture of a merman and a girl by a pool. I like the concept of mermaids and mermen in artificial bodies of water. Then again I just like the concept of mermaids and mermen.

texas, folks
Too tired to write. Its past my bedtime. Here’s a draft of Texas’s coat of arms.
Name:
Colors: Sky Blue and Tan?
Mascot: Guadalupe Bass

another draft of the socal coat
Based on some feedback I got, I revisited the coat of arms for California. I’m still not sure I like it, cause it seems to simplistic in some parts, but I think its an improvement over the first one. For one thing, the surfboard in the first one wasn’t even recognizable. The three surfboards in this one are recognizable, right?

and the shoemaker’s kids go barefoot…
And here is a coat of arms for the South. Funny that the coat of arms for my own region is so slapdash. I just really wanted to post another one of these tonight, so this one’s being shown off while it is very much a work in progress. You can see that the crest above it and the seaweed below it were just scribbled there right before I posted this so that the coat would be just barely complete enough to show. Just bear in mind that these are all first drafts, and will likely be revisited.
Southern Pod
Colors: Azure and Green?
Mascot: Sailfish

and here’s a proposed design for the great lakes region
Here is a design for the great lakes coat of arms.
Great Lakes Pod
Colors: Yet to be determined

another coat of arms
I just got back from an underwater hockey tournament, and what better way to unwind than to quickly draw a preliminary design for another one of the pods? I just want to stress that these are all just early versions, nowhere near final, and that all the pods will get to decide on whether they like the coat of arms I’m proposing for them.
Also, don’t get the wrong idea and think I’m going to start posting these every day. I often work in spurts, and feel motivated long enough to draw two things, and then not draw again for a bit.
New England Pod
Colors: Red and Royal Blue
Mascot: Atlantic Cod
update on the new mermaiding forum, now with medieval heraldry!
While I’ll be talking more about what I have in mind for the new and improved mermaid costuming forum (which should debut this July), I want to give a sneak peak at one thing the new site is going to introduce: membership groups based on geographical location!
Basically everyone can join a group just for mermaid enthusiasts in their region of the country. These groups would presumably be called “pods” (naturally), and are intended to build kinship between different people; as soon as someone joins the community there’s a preexisting group of potential friends waiting for them. Another effect is that it makes planning small, local conventions easier, cause you already know who is in your region that wants to be a part of a larger community. Each pod will have a name, official colors, a mascot, and a logo or coat of arms, basically just like sports teams and the houses in Harry Potter. While each pod will get the final word in what its colors and mascot and logo is, I’m going to make proposed coats of arms that will be the default until the pod makes any changes. Today I spent some time brainstorming the coat of arms for the SoCal pod. It still needs some work, such as some shading, adjustments to the line thickness, and the colors, but as far as layout it gives you an idea what I have in mind. The SoCal Pod’s colors will probably be orange-gold, and sunset pink, and their fish is the Garbaldi, pictured here as the supporters of the coat. Check it out folks, and let me know what you think!
